How Medeco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• Medeco Maxum 11* series: sticky thumbturn or hard key rotation. The sidebar pins in the Maxum are precision-machined and unforgiving of grit. In Illinois, road salt tracked into entryways in January gets into the keyway, accelerates wear on the sidebar grooves, and by March the key wants to fight you. We disassemble, ultrasonically clean the sidebar chamber, lubricate with Medeco-specified graphite compound, and replace only the pins that show measurable wear - not the whole core.
• Medeco Original (key-in-knob / deadbolt): key works in one direction only. This is almost always a sheared top pin, usually pin 3 or 5, caused by forcing a slightly worn key. The Original’s pin stack is taller than most, so the shear line sees more stress. We decode the remaining pins, cut a factory-spec key to the original bitting, and replace the sheared pin with OEM Medeco pin stock. Aftermarket pins exist; we do not use them on Original cylinders because the tolerances are too tight.
• Medeco BiLevel: latch bolt drags or does not fully extend. The BiLevel uses a deadlatching mechanism with a smaller footprint than the Maxum, and the bolt face can deform slightly where it strikes the strike plate. Illinois homes built 1960-1985 often have steel door frames that flex in summer humidity and contract hard in February; the strike plate shifts 1/16 inch and the BiLevel bolt starts catching. We file the strike to spec, check frame alignment with a long level, and reset the deadlatch timing. Sometimes the bolt itself needs replacement - we stock BiLevel bolts because they are not interchangeable with Maxum.
• Medeco m3 (interactive+): false set - key turns 45 degrees and stops. The m3’s interactive element is a moving pin that rides a secondary shear line. When that pin gets dry or the spring weakens, you get a false set that feels like the lock should open. We see this in Illinois lakefront homes where summer humidity swells the door and puts side load on the cylinder. Fix: pull the cylinder, check interactive pin movement under magnification, replace the spring if compression is below spec, and re-lube with Houdini Lock Lube - not WD-40, which leaves a film that gums up the interactive element in cold weather.
• Medeco deadbolt: cylinder spins in the housing. The set screw that locks the cylinder into the thumbturn housing backs out over years of use. On Medeco deadbolts, this screw is 8-32 x 3/8 inch, fine thread, and it needs threadlocker on reassembly. We have had customers try to tighten it themselves and strip the head. Our fix: extract if necessary, replace with stainless 8-32, apply blue Loctite, torque to spec, and test 50 cycles. Takes ten minutes if you catch it early, an hour if we are extracting a stripped screw from brass.
