Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

Kwikset’s master key architecture breaks down into two families, and mixing them up is the most common compatibility headache we see in Illinois. Traditional pin-tumbler Kwikset cylinders, the KD and KA series, use standard .115″ diameter bottom pins and master wafers at .030″ increments. The model number stamped on the latch or deadbolt housing also helps, typically starting with “740” or “660” for traditional, “980” or “818” for SmartKey. Signs Your Kwikset Master Key System Is Failing

• Change key works, master key doesn’t. The master wafer stack has worn or shifted, often from years of heavy brass-on-brass contact. In Illinois, the freeze-thaw cycle accelerates this, as metal expands and contracts through winter.
