Which Baldwin Models This Applies To

The Estate Connected uses a rectangular mounting plate with a 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ backset, while the Evolved handlesets require a specific bore hole spacing, 5-1/2″ center-to-center, that does not match standard Kwikset or Schlage prep.
Here’s where Illinois homeowners get tripped up. Baldwin’s smart modules are not cross-compatible between Estate and Evolved, even within the same brand. The Z-Wave module in an Estate 8235 will not retrofit into an Evolved lever set. Signs Your Baldwin Smart Lock Installation Is Failing
- The keypad freezes or lags in cold weather. Baldwin’s capacitive touch pads draw more current when temperatures drop below 20°F, which Illinois sees regularly from December through February. If your batteries are alkaline and older than four months, voltage sag under load causes the pad to miss inputs or freeze entirely.
- The deadbolt throws but does not fully retract. This usually means the Baldwin smart latch is binding against a misaligned strike plate. In older Illinois homes with settled door frames, especially in Oak Park or Evanston where we see a lot of 1920s construction, the bolt scrapes the strike and the motor strains until it faults.
- The app shows “connected” but commands fail. The Z-Wave or Bluetooth radio module is likely failing. Baldwin’s early Estate Connected units, pre-2019, had a batch of radios that degraded after 18-24 months of normal use.
- The motor whirs but the bolt does not move. The Baldwin smart lock uses a small gearbox between the motor and the deadbolt tailpiece. The nylon gears crack if the bolt has been binding for a while, and once that happens, the motor runs free.
- The lock beeps three times and flashes red on entry attempts. This is Baldwin’s low-battery warning, but it also appears when the voltage regulator on the logic board starts failing. If fresh lithium batteries do not clear it within 48 hours, the board needs replacement.

What drives the range: door thickness over 1-3/4″ requires longer Baldwin screws and sometimes a different tailpiece. Metal doors need specialized drill bits and slower feed rates. If your existing deadbolt was a different brand, the bore hole may be 2-1/8″ but the Baldwin smart lock needs a clean edge, no splintering, or the gasket will not seal.
