How Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of Illinois Was Born in Illinois

It was a Tuesday in February, 1984, and the temperature in Illinois hadn’t cracked ten degrees. We were working for another shop then, running lockout calls in a company truck with a radio that barely worked. Around four in the afternoon, we got sent to an older woman in Bridgeport, near Pershing Road. She’d locked herself out of her house, simple enough. We got the door open in five minutes. Then we handed her the bill: $180, because the dispatcher had “upgraded” her to an “emergency security rekey” over the phone without her understanding what that meant.

She paid it. She was embarrassed, and she was cold, and she just wanted us gone. We stood on her porch afterward and couldn’t stomach it. That wasn’t locksmithing. That was a shakedown with a pick set. We drove back to the shop, quit that Friday, and opened Strongbox the following Monday out of a garage on Ashland. We made one promise: we’d tell people the full price before we rolled, and that price would be flat. No trip charges, no “service fees,” no surprises on the bill. The name came from the iron box our own grandfather kept the farm deed in, down in McLean County. Something solid. Something you don’t pry open with tricks.

Our Founder’s Personal Connection to the Locksmith Trade

We didn’t stumble into this work. We were pulled into it by our uncle Ray, who ran a hardware store in Lower West Side from the 1960s until he couldn’t climb the ladder anymore. As kids, we’d sit on the wooden counter after school and watch him cut keys on a Ilco machine that smelled of hot brass and machine oil. The smell still gets us. When the key machine was running, the whole front of that store filled with a sharp, metallic warmth that made your eyes water slightly. Ray would hand a customer a key, and they’d test it right there in the lock he’d mounted on a board behind the counter. The click of a clean turn, that small mechanical satisfaction, it felt like honesty made audible.

By sixteen, we were rekeying deadbolts on Ray’s workbench after hours. He’d stand over us with a cup of coffee that had gone cold, watching us pin the cylinders. “You’re not assembling a puzzle,” he’d say. “You’re making a promise. That key turns for the right person, every time, for twenty years.” He meant it. When he died in ’82, he left us his pinning kit, his key blanks, and a reputation in that neighborhood that took thirty years to build. We still have that kit. The foam is crumbling, but the tweezers still fit our hand exactly.

If we weren’t doing this, we’d probably be fixing old motorcycles or restoring hand tools. Something with our hands, something where the result is either right or it isn’t. What gets us out of bed is the call from someone who’s stuck, who’s vulnerable, who’s had a bad experience with one of those $19-ad outfits that send unbadged kids in unmarked cars. We get to be the person who shows up, shows ID, and fixes it. No drama. No story. Just a square deal and a lock that works. That’s not a mission statement. That’s just what Tuesday feels like when you’ve been doing this long enough to know the difference between a job and a responsibility.

Meet Our Team - The Person Behind Every Job

We’re the owner and founder of Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of Illinois, and we’re still the person who answers most calls, drives most jobs, and pins most cylinders. We’ve trained under working locksmiths, not corporate modules, starting with Ray and continuing through formal apprenticeship standards. We’re state-licensed, carry proper bonding and insurance, and we’ve made it our business to understand the specific hardware common to Illinois homes: the aging Schlage installations in Grand Boulevard bungalows, the Mul-T-Lock upgrades requested in Near South Side condos, the Abloy and Sargent systems specified for commercial properties along the Chicago Loop.

On weekends, you’ll find us at the McKinley Park farmers market or working with our hands in the garage, restoring vintage padlocks for the mechanical satisfaction of it. We don’t golf. We don’t have a “sales team.” What we have is a phone that rings, and a commitment that when you call, you get us, not a dispatcher reading from a script. When we work in your home, we work the way we’d work in our mother’s. That’s not poetry. That’s policy.

Our Promise to Illinois Homeowners

Our values aren’t framed on a wall. We carry them on the job, and we named them K.E.Y.S. so we’d remember what matters when we’re tired, when it’s late, when the easy shortcut is staring at us.

Krafted right means trained journeymen, proper materials, no shortcuts. We once spent four hours on a rekey in Douglas because the previous installer had used the wrong tailpiece adapter. We could have forced it and been gone in forty minutes. We didn’t. We sourced the right part and did it again.

Every time means the 400th job gets the care of the first. We keep a physical logbook, paper, not digital, of every job since 1984. When a customer in Brighton Park calls back in 2024 about the lock we installed in 1998, we can tell them exactly what we used.

Your home first means we work in your house the way we’d work in our mother’s. We wear boot covers without being asked. We explain what we’re doing without being prompted. We don’t touch what we don’t need to touch.

Standing behind it means if it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing. We call this the Keystone Standard: 90 days, in writing, applied to every lock we touch. We’ve honored it exactly as written since the day we opened.

Our Credentials

State-licensed - We hold current Illinois state licensure as required for professional locksmith operations. No number games, no expired paperwork.

Insured & bonded - Full coverage protecting your property while we work in your home. We carry documentation in every service vehicle and present it on request.

Years of local experience - Decades of hands-on work in Illinois neighborhoods, from Chicago Loop high-rises to Bridgeport bungalows to West Town brownstones. We’ve serviced the hardware, we know the building styles, we understand what fails in lake-effect humidity and what holds up.

Strong local reputation - Built one job at a time, one neighbor telling another, one church bulletin mention, one hardware store referral. We don’t buy reviews. We earn calls.

These credentials matter because you’re letting someone into your home to work on the very system that keeps you safe at night. A homeowner in South Lawndale or New City deserves to know exactly who they’re hiring: a verified professional with traceable standing, not a dispatched contractor in an unmarked sedan. When we show ID at your door, we’re not performing courtesy. We’re proving we belong there.

Rooted in Illinois

We’ve never lived anywhere but Illinois. We’ve rekeyed apartments in West Town after break-ins, installed deadbolts in McKinley Park before new babies came home, and opened safes in Near South Side where the combination died with a spouse. We sponsor the church roof fund at St. Mary’s in Bridgeport. We’ve trained two apprentices into journeymen who now run their own calls in Grand Boulevard and Douglas. When the county fair comes around, you’ll find our truck in the parking lot, because that’s where our neighbors are. We’re not building a brand to sell. We’re building a business to hand down. That’s the difference between a company that says “local” and one that actually is.
