- Visible gap between deadbolt faceplate and door edge. The mounting screws have loosened or the door has swollen and shrunk through enough seasons that the bore has elongated. Common in solid-core wood doors in Oak Park and Evanston homes built before 1960.
- Strike plate shows metal shavings or the bolt has scored the strike. The bolt is dragging, which accelerates wear on both the bolt face and the strike. Eventually the bolt won’t reach full extension, and the deadbolt is no longer doing its job.
