Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent built automotive lock cylinders and key systems for a range of fleet and commercial vehicles from the 1970s through the early 2000s, plus select passenger vehicles with OEM Sargent ignition and door hardware. The common series we see in Illinois are the Sargent 6300 and 6400 automotive pin-tumbler lines, along with the older 5300 series found in GM and Ford fleet vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s.

To identify what you have, check the face of the ignition cylinder or door lock for a stamped “SARGENT” mark and a four-digit series number. The key bow (the head you hold) often carries a letter code - A through G in the 6400 series - which tells us the pinning and blank profile. Get this wrong, and the key will slide in but not lift the pins to shear line.

Signs Your Sargent Car Key Cutting Is Failing

• Key sticks or requires jiggling in the ignition. Worn pin tumblers inside the Sargent cylinder have developed flat spots where the key lifts them. The brass pins were never hardened, so twenty years of Illinois temperature swings - 90-degree summers to sub-zero January mornings - accelerate the wear.
• Transponder light flashes but engine will not crank. The chip inside your Sargent key head has lost programming sync with the immobilizer module, or the antenna coil around the ignition cylinder has cracked solder joints. We see this often after a battery jump or electrical spike.
• Remote fob works intermittently or only at close range. The Sargent RF fob’s battery is failing, or the carbon contacts under the rubber buttons have oxidized. DIY or Call Us?

There is no physical danger in carrying a Sargent key blank to a hardware store kiosk, but there is a good chance of wasting money. Big-box key machines are calibrated for common Schlage and Kwikset profiles, not Sargent’s deeper cut angles and tighter tolerances. A miscut blank will slide in, bind halfway, and leave you with a stuck key and a tow bill.

What you can safely check: the series number stamped on your lock face, whether your key has a visible transponder pellet or RFID chip, and whether the fob buttons click crisply. What you should not attempt: disassembling the ignition cylinder to extract a broken key, or trying to program a transponder with online “workaround” videos - you get one or two immobilizer pairing attempts before the module locks out and requires dealer-level equipment.
