Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying in Illinois, IL | Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of Illinois

Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying: The Illinois Owner’s Guide

Mul-T-Lock lock rekeying in Illinois typically runs $145-$275 for residential cylinders, including the new key set and pinning to your master system, and we can usually do it same-day if you call before noon. We stock Mul-T-Lock Interactive+, Classic, and MT5+ pinning kits on our trucks, so most rekeys in Chicago, Naperville, and Rockford don’t require a parts run. Most owners figure out they need this service when a key starts sticking at 45 degrees, a tenant moves out, or they realize every contractor from the last fifteen years still has a working key.

Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To

Mul-T-Lock makes three main cylinder platforms, and each rekeys differently enough that the wrong kit won’t even seat in the plug.

The Classic series uses a dimple key with a horizontal milling and a pin-in-pin stack. Look for a key head shaped like a rounded rectangle with the Mul-T-Lock logo stamped on the bow. These have been around since the 1980s, so if your lock is original to a 1990s Chicago condo conversion, odds are it’s a Classic.

The Interactive+ added a telescoping pin and a moving element in the key itself. The key head is slightly wider, and you’ll feel a subtle click if you wiggle the key at full insertion. Interactive+ cylinders are backward-compatible with Classic keys, but not the other way around. This trips up a lot of owners in Illinois who buy a used Interactive+ cylinder on eBay and wonder why their old Classic key won’t turn it.

The MT5+ is the current flagship, with a double-sided dimple key, an alpha spring sidebar, and a magnetic pin in the plug face. The key has a distinctive cutout near the bow. MT5+ rekeying requires a separate pinning kit and a special follower tool. We carry both.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Mul-T-Lock. For OEM pinning, we source factory pins and springs. For most residential rekeys in Illinois, we use equivalent-grade aftermarket pinning that meets the same tolerances. The difference is mainly warranty tracking. OEM gets you a Mul-T-Lock factory card; aftermarket gets you our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. Both work. One costs less.

Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • The key catches at the same depth every time. This usually means a single pin has worn a flat spot or picked up grit from Illinois road salt tracked in on boots. The pin hangs at the shear line instead of sliding past it.
  • You need to jiggle the key to find the sweet spot. Multiple pins are out of spec, or the plug has developed axial play from years of heavy key rings. In older Oak Park and Evanston homes with original Mul-T-Lock hardware, we see this after twenty-plus years of daily use.
  • A key works in one lock but not its twin. Your locks were keyed alike at install, but one cylinder was rekeyed somewhere along the way and the pinning diverged. Common after a handyman “fixed” one door and not the other.
  • The lock turns fine but the bolt doesn’t throw. This is actually a tailpiece or cam issue, not the cylinder. We check it during rekeying, since the cylinder has to come out anyway.
  • You’ve lost track of who has keys. Not a mechanical failure, but the reason maybe a third of our Mul-T-Lock rekey calls happen. In Illinois rental markets, especially around university towns, this is practical security maintenance, not paranoia.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s how Mul-T-Lock rekeying pricing breaks down for Illinois homeowners:

Service Price Range
Single residential cylinder rekey (Classic/Interactive+) $145 - $195
MT5+ cylinder rekey $195 - $275
Master key system rekey (per cylinder, 3+ units) $125 - $165
Lost key extraction + rekey (if key broken in cylinder) $175 - $250
New key blanks (first 2 included, additional) $12 - $18 each

The range depends on cylinder accessibility (a rim cylinder on a wood door takes ten minutes; a mortise cylinder behind a storm door takes longer), whether we need to decode a lost key, and if the cylinder itself is damaged and needs replacement. We quote flat on the phone before the truck rolls, and every job in writing - that is the whole promise. Seniors and veterans take 5% off. If your total is over $250, ask about our $50 repair discount.

DIY or Call Us?

Mul-T-Lock cylinders can be removed from most doors with standard screws. If you’re handy, you can pull the cylinder and bring it to us. We’ll rekey it while you wait, usually twenty minutes, and you reinstall it yourself. Saves the trip charge.

Where DIY goes wrong: forcing a stuck key can snap it in the plug, turning a $175 rekey into a $250 extraction. And if you pull the cylinder without noting the cam orientation, the thumbturn or deadbolt won’t align on reassembly. We’ve had Illinois homeowners call us at 9 PM on a Saturday because they took the cylinder out fine but couldn’t get the tailpiece seated right.

The pinning itself isn’t dangerous, but it requires a follower tool, a pinning tray, and the correct key gauge. Without those, you will scatter springs across your kitchen table and end up with a cylinder that works in one position and jams in another. If you’re not set up for it, call (844) 321-2640. We stock the kits. We do the math. You get keys that work.
